Rockhal: Twenty Years of Live Music, International Stars and Cultural Experiences in Luxembourg
From its beginnings on a former industrial site in Esch-Belval to its position as one of the Grand Duchy’s leading live entertainment venues, Rockhal has helped transform Luxembourg’s musical landscape. With an autumn and winter programme featuring Bob Dylan, Laura Pausini, Bryan Adams, Tokio Hotel and many more, the venue continues to attract international artists and audiences from across the Greater Region.
When Rockhal opened its doors in 2005, the ambition was clear: Luxembourg needed a major venue capable of welcoming internationally renowned artists while giving local musicians the facilities and opportunities to develop their careers.
Two decades later, that ambition has become an important part of the country’s cultural identity. Rockhal is now a regular destination for touring musicians, rock and metal fans, electronic music enthusiasts, comedy audiences and families looking for live entertainment.
Situated in Esch-Belval, in the south of Luxembourg, the venue has grown alongside one of the country’s most remarkable urban transformations. What was once an industrial landscape dominated by steel production has developed into a district combining education, research, business, housing and culture.
Rockhal has been central to that change, bringing thousands of people to Belval for concerts and other live events throughout the year.
The history of Rockhal: from steel country to a music destination
Rockhal’s story is closely connected to the redevelopment of Belval, an area with a long industrial history.
As Luxembourg’s steel industry evolved, former industrial sites became available for new uses. Belval was identified as an important location for a major cultural project that would support the country’s artistic development and help create a new identity for the district.
The Centre de Musiques Amplifiées, the public institution responsible for Rockhal, was established to manage the project. In October 2004, the government presented the plans for a complex that would combine concert venues with rehearsal rooms, recording facilities and resources for musicians.
The first event took place on 19 June 2005, during the Fête Internationale de la Musique. The official inauguration followed on 23 September 2005, with British electronic rock pioneers The Prodigy performing at the opening ceremony.
The choice of The Prodigy was fitting. Their energetic blend of electronic music, rock and rave culture reflected the diversity of amplified music that the venue was designed to accommodate.
Rockhal was developed as more than a conventional concert hall. Its facilities include several performance spaces with capacities ranging from approximately 180 to 6,500 people, alongside the Rocklab, which supports musical creation, rehearsal and professional development.
That combination allows the venue to accommodate intimate performances, emerging artists, established touring acts and major international productions.
Over the years, Rockhal has welcomed artists from across the musical spectrum, helping Luxembourg audiences experience international tours without travelling to neighbouring countries. Its programme also gives local and regional artists opportunities to reach new audiences.
The venue’s mission continues to balance these two ambitions: bringing the world to Luxembourg while helping Luxembourg’s own music scene grow.
More than concerts
Although Rockhal is best known for live music, its programme extends into comedy, family entertainment, dance-related productions and other live events.
Its different spaces allow organisers to choose a setting suited to the performance. The Main Hall accommodates larger productions, while the Club and Box provide more intimate concert experiences. The Floor offers an additional flexible performance space.
Rockhal is also closely associated with Rocklab, which supports musicians through rehearsal facilities, creative development and professional resources. Together, the two form part of the Centre de Musiques Amplifiées, often presented under the shared identity “We Are CMA”.
This wider mission is important to Luxembourg’s cultural infrastructure. A major venue can bring international artists to the country, but the availability of rehearsal spaces, recording facilities and professional support also helps local musicians develop their own careers.
Twenty years after its opening, Rockhal remains a major meeting point for music fans from Luxembourg, Belgium, France and Germany.

Planning a visit
Rockhal is located at 5, avenue du Rock’n’Roll, L-4361 Esch-sur-Alzette, in the Belval district. The venue benefits from rail access through Belval-Université station, making it accessible from Luxembourg City and other parts of the country.
Visitors should consult the official agenda for updated ticket availability, door-opening times, age restrictions and event-specific information. Some performances may sell out well in advance, while others may be cancelled or rescheduled.
The full programme is available at rockhal.lu/agenda-en.
A venue that continues to shape Luxembourg’s cultural life
Rockhal’s development reflects the transformation of Belval itself. What began as a major cultural project on a former industrial site has become an established destination for international tours, local music and live entertainment.
Its strength lies in the variety of experiences it offers. One week may feature an internationally recognised singer-songwriter; the next may bring a metal tour, an electronic music event, a comedy performance or a national music-industry celebration.
For Luxembourg, Rockhal provides both access to international culture and infrastructure for the development of local talent. For audiences across the Greater Region, it remains a place where musical discovery and major live performances come together.
As its next programme unfolds from autumn 2026 into spring 2027, Rockhal continues to demonstrate that Luxembourg’s live music scene can compete for attention well beyond the country’s borders.
